Battle Beasts
What: Plastic animal warrior figures with painted details, articulated arms and heat-sensitive stickers on their chests that when rubbed reveal a symbol: either fire, water or wood (these symbols reflect each character's strength--fire beat wood, wood beat water, water beat fire). There were four series released, with the first three containing 76 beasts and the fourth, "Shadow Beasts," containing 36 and replacing the chest stickers with orbs.
When: Beginning in 1987 and through the late-'80s.
Where: U.S., Japan (at least). Sold in toy stores, department stores.
Who: Developed by Japanese company Takara, released by Hasbro outside of Japan
